Formatly

Privacy Policy

Formatly does not collect any data. It has no servers, no account system, and makes no network requests of any kind. Everything it does happens inside your browser, on your computer.

That is not a statement of intent. It is a property of the build, checked on every release by an automated scan of the shipped bundles — and it is checkable by you in about thirty seconds, which the last section explains.

What Formatly does

Formatly changes the letters in your text to Unicode characters that look styled — so Hello becomes 𝐇𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨. Social platforms accept plain text only, so this substitution is how the styling survives being posted.

All of that happens locally, in the browser tab you are already looking at. There is no step where your text is sent somewhere to be processed, because there is nowhere for it to be sent.

What data is involved, and where it goes

There is a difference between data Formatly accesses while working and data it collects. Formatly accesses text in order to format it. It collects nothing.

If you have Chrome Sync enabled, Chrome syncs those preferences across your own devices under Google's terms. That is Chrome's own mechanism, between your own devices; the data does not pass through us, and there is no "us" for it to pass through.

Permissions, in plain terms

Formatly requests exactly two things.

Storage — to remember your settings, to keep unsaved writing from being lost if the popup closes, and — only if you turn the setting on — to save your drafts on your own computer.
Access to www.facebook.com and web.facebook.com — to show the formatting toolbar when you select text in a Facebook composer. Formatly reads only the text you have actively selected. It cannot see any other website.

There is no tabs permission, no scripting, no activeTab, and no clipboard permission. Chrome shows you that list at install time and again on the extension's own page, so you never have to take this paragraph's word for it.

What Formatly does not do

No account, sign-in, or email collection
No analytics, telemetry, or usage tracking
No advertising
No cookies or tracking identifiers
No selling or sharing of data — there is no data to sell
No reading of your clipboard. Formatly can write to it when you click Copy; it can never read it
No reading of your Facebook feed, profile, messages, or cookies
No access to any website other than the two Facebook addresses listed above

Third parties

None. Formatly contains no analytics SDKs, no advertising libraries, no content delivery networks, and no external services of any kind. The extension ships no remote fonts and loads nothing at runtime that was not in the package you installed.

Keeping your data, and removing it

Settings persist until you change them or uninstall the extension.
Editor text is memory-only and disappears when you close your browser. The "Clear all" button removes it immediately.
Drafts are memory-only unless you turn on "Keep drafts after I close the browser". Either way, Settings → Drafts → Delete all drafts erases every draft from both places straight away, and closing a draft's tab removes just that one.
Uninstalling removes Formatly's local data. Settings stored via chrome.storage.sync may remain in your Google account, because Chrome manages that storage rather than Formatly; you can remove it through Chrome's own sync settings.

Children

Formatly collects no data from anyone, including children. It is not directed at children under 13.

Verifying any of this

The claim that Formatly makes no network requests is enforced before every release by an automated check that inspects the built extension and fails the build if a network call, or any external URL, appears. Checking the shipped bundles rather than the source catches a dependency, a stylesheet or a font doing it too.

You do not have to take that on trust, because the same claim is checkable from your side in about thirty seconds: open Chrome DevTools, switch to the Network tab, and use Formatly. The panel stays empty.

Chrome also states the extension's entire permission list on its own page at chrome://extensions — storage, and two Facebook addresses. That is Chrome reporting it, not us.

Changes to this policy

Material changes are announced in the changelog and reflected in the Chrome Web Store listing before they take effect. A change that caused Formatly to transmit anything would be a change to the product's central claim, and would be announced as such rather than buried in a policy revision.
