Strip the comments, editor attributes and excess decimal places out of an SVG. In a typical exported icon that is more than half the file, and none of it is the drawing. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.
How to do it
- Paste the contents of your .svg file.
- Check what it found, and how much smaller the result is.
- Press Copy.
Questions
Will it change how my icon looks?
No. Everything removed is something that cannot change what is drawn — an editor’s comment, a namespace no browser reads, an attribute already set to its default. The two things that look like clutter and are not — viewBox, and ids that something refers to — are kept.
Where does the saving actually come from?
Usually the numbers. An exported path is often written to fifteen decimal places, which is far beyond what any screen can show at any zoom — and it is frequently more than half the file. Three decimals is the default, and you can raise it for a map or a large chart.
Why are ids left alone by default?
Because an id can be referred to from outside the file — by CSS on your page, by a script, or by a
What about the inside my SVG?
Removing it saves a few bytes and costs a screen reader the name of your icon. It is removed with the other metadata by default, and the page says so — if the icon needs a name, put one back or label it where you use it.
