Favicon Generator

Generate a favicon set from one image — the ico, the PNGs, the manifest and the markup to paste into your head. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.

How to do it

  1. Drop a square image onto the box. 512px or larger gives the best result.
  2. Type what your site is called.
  3. Download the zip, put the files at the root of your site, and paste in the markup.

Questions

Why only five files? Other generators make twenty.

Because most of those have been unnecessary for years — a precomposed 72px Apple icon is for iOS 6. Twenty files is twenty requests and twenty things to keep in step. Each file here says what would break without it, so you can check that claim rather than trust it.

Do I still need favicon.ico?

Yes. Browsers, feed readers and anything that scrapes a page still request it from the site root by default, and without it every visit logs a 404.

What if my image is not square?

It is cropped to a square from the centre, and the page says so before generating anything. Crop it yourself first if the centre is not the part you want.

Will my logo work as a favicon?

At 16 pixels a favicon shows a shape, not a picture. A single letter or a simple mark reads; a detailed logo or a photograph does not.
