Generate an MD5 checksum of any text, in your browser — the format still printed beside most downloads. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.
How to do it
- Paste your text.
- Press Hash.
- Copy the MD5 row.
Questions
Is MD5 safe to use?
For checking that a download arrived intact, yes, and that is what it is mostly used for. For anything security-related, no: two different files can be constructed to share an MD5, so it cannot prove a file has not been tampered with deliberately.
Why is MD5 not built into browsers?
The browser cryptography API deliberately offers only algorithms considered sound, and MD5 is not one of them. It is implemented directly on this page, and checked against the official test values published with the specification.
Can I check a downloaded file with this?
This page hashes text. For a file, most operating systems have a built-in command — md5 or md5sum in a terminal.
