Convert to WebP

Convert JPEG and PNG images to WebP. For images on a website this is usually the single easiest size win available — often a third smaller at the same visible quality. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.

How to do it

  1. Add your JPEG or PNG images.
  2. Leave the output format on WebP.
  3. Convert, and download.

Questions

Do browsers support WebP?

Every current browser does, and has for years — Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge and the mobile versions of all of them. Very old software may not, which is worth remembering if the image is going somewhere other than a modern web page.

How much smaller is it?

Commonly 25% to 35% smaller than an equivalent JPEG, and often far more than that against a PNG screenshot. The result panel shows the actual figure for your file rather than a claim.

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes, unlike JPEG. A transparent PNG converts to a transparent WebP with nothing filled in behind it.

What about animated images?

An animated PNG or WebP is not converted, because decoding one gives back only the first frame and the rest would be silently lost. The tool refuses and says why.
