Count a post the way X counts it — in UTF-16 code units, where most emoji cost two characters. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.
How to do it
- Paste your post in.
- Read the X row, which uses X’s own measure rather than a generic one.
- Trim until you are inside 280.
Questions
Why does an emoji cost two characters?
X counts UTF-16 code units. Most emoji are stored as two of those, so they cost two. Characters in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cost one each, which surprises people the other way round.
Is the limit still 280?
For a standard post, yes. Paid tiers allow longer posts, and those limits change — so treat the number as the free-tier limit and check your own account if you subscribe.
Do links count as their full length?
No. X replaces every link with a fixed-length shortened form, so a very long URL costs the same as a short one. This page counts the text you typed, so a post with long links will read as longer here than X will treat it.
