Generate MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 checksums of any text at once, in your browser. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.
How to do it
- Paste the text you want to hash.
- Press Hash. Every algorithm is computed at once.
- Copy whichever one you need.
Questions
Which algorithm should I use?
SHA-256 for anything new. MD5 and SHA-1 are both broken for security purposes — it is possible to construct two different inputs with the same hash — but they are still the format printed beside many downloads, which is why they are offered here.
Can I use this to hash a password?
No. Please do not. Passwords need a deliberately slow, salted function such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. Every algorithm here is designed to be fast, which is exactly the wrong property for a password — it makes guessing fast too.
Why does SHA say it needs a secure context?
Browsers only expose their cryptography API over HTTPS. On a page served over plain HTTP the SHA functions are unavailable; MD5 is implemented here directly and still works.
Are these the same hashes my server would produce?
Yes, as long as the input is the same bytes. Text is hashed as UTF-8, which is what standard libraries do by default.
