SHA-256 Generator

Generate a SHA-256 checksum of any text, in your browser. Your file never leaves this page. Everything happens in your browser, and there is no upload endpoint to send it to — that is checked by a build gate that fails if any network code reaches a tool’s bundle.

How to do it

  1. Paste your text.
  2. Press Hash.
  3. Copy the SHA-256 row.

Questions

What is SHA-256 for?

Verifying that something has not changed. The same input always gives the same 64-character result, and no practical way is known to find two different inputs that produce one.

Is SHA-256 good enough?

Yes, for checksums, signatures and integrity checks. It is the current default almost everywhere. It is still the wrong tool for storing passwords.

Why is my result different from another tool’s?

Almost always a difference in the input rather than the algorithm — a trailing newline, or a different character encoding. This page hashes UTF-8 bytes.
